| | Sunday, August 05, 2001 - 07:27 pm 1) It's a mechanical function controlled by an electric solenoid in the transmission valve body. Basically, all converters slip a bit, so GM built a clutch into ours. When the solenoid is energized, the clutch is engaged, ("locks up") and you have no slippage. GM did it mainly for fuel efficiency.... of course, the "go fast" crowd has figured out how make it a performance item 2) Take a look at: Torque Converter Basics That's a good tutorial on all of this...

Transmission removal is also covered on the page listed above.
