Anthony Romano (Anthony605) | Sunday, November 04, 2001 - 10:49 pm I have a 2004R that is out of a monte SS. What are the differences with a 2004R out of a Turbo T? I know the governor for sure. What would i have to do to the trans to make it the same as one out of a Turbo T? Thanks |
Phil Aubrey (Paubrey) | Monday, November 05, 2001 - 08:59 am Hi The trans you have came from a 140HP engine. The 200r4 was not known as one of the better transmissions around. When I was with Buick we repaired a lot of them but the GN or T-Type never seemed to fail. One day I got into the parts book to cross check the part numbers. Other than the case and some hard parts the GN numbers were different. You could just change the torque convertor and governor but I would expect it won't last long. |
Patrick Ireland (Pireland) | Monday, November 05, 2001 - 12:41 pm Anthony, the guy who owned the my car before me had the transmission replaced by an "expert". Ha!. They screwed up the BRF valve body so they put in a Monte Carlo transmission. They used the governor from the old GN transmission but kept the CRF valve body from the Monte. The transmission shifted really hard and shortly after I started driving it, second gear started slipping. Making a long story short, it self distructed. Boy, was I aggravated. After a long search, I found a 200-R4 that needed rebuilding. It was an expensive adventure. Now that the correct transmission is in there, the car runs beautifully. My advice, get as far away from that Monte Carlo transmission as you can and get hold of a bonified GN transmission. From my limited knowledge, the two key items are the BRF valve body and the governor. Patrick Ireland '87 GN |
Scott Przybysz (Priz) | Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 04:18 pm I've been told that the governor, valvebody, servo, and accumulator (I think) are the only differences. Also, if you can't get a BRF tranny(BR3 valvebody) or a TIF( or whatever a TTA tranny is), then go with a BQ out of an 84-85 TR. If you can't get one of those, or can't afford one, then go for the Monte SS, CZ code. They can handle the power if done right. From what I was told, they are all actually pretty close. Now a regular 2004r, that's a different story. Get ahold of Bruce Toelle(sp?) at www.ptsnctb.com . He knows everything that needs to be done and can do it for you. He even has all the parts you'd need to turn a regular 2004r into a BRF tranny. Good luck, Scott |
