My '87 Limited has 120k on it. I recently noticed that that 1-2 shift is OK under light load, but almost indiscernible under hard throttle (no barking tires, no jolt, etc.). I know that these 2 factors mean an overhaul is in order. Here's the dilemma:

I am also going to install the following: TE-44, 36 lb injectors, new FPR, Walbro 340 pump, new valve springs and a chip burned for high (5000+ feet) altitude. The shop that's going to do this is telling me that the end result will be about 350-400 hp. My common sense tells me that having a solid tranny should be the higher priority, but a nagging little voice hints that having the engine done first will let the tranny builder know what he's working to. I was going to do this myself, but my late winter through early summer is going to be used for accumulating frequent-flier miles for work, not road time for fun.

How does one tell a shop what the ultimate intent is? The shop I'm considering has a good reputation for building units good to low 12's (at 5800 ft). Should I just tell him to make it as beefy as he can?

Any advice (even cheeky responses) are appreciated!

All the mods in the world without a good trans will not transfer the torque and hp. Do the trans
first and the car should still perform decent. If
you have any money left than start on perf. parts.
A stock turbo car can easy do low 13's and with a few mods 12,s

I just got my trainy done. I don't know if it is what you would call "beefy", but good enough. I got borg warner clutches and bands, billet super servo and TCI shift kit. I also had them put a cooler on. If I was you, (with all the mods you are doing) I would get a higher stall converter (3000-3500?).

dude. don't waste your time. strengthen the things that matter first. no use in having that much in hp and then blowing your tranny, rear end etc. spend the $$$ on the tranny. back when i was into the racing and had owned my car we were rebuilding trannys with heavy duty clutches for 3rd and 4th gears. is this still the case??? at least if you rebuild the tranny and then add your parts your tranny will be able handle it.
