chad frey (Gn86er) | Monday, February 04, 2002 - 08:35 pm hello 86 gn here, i am sure my tranny needs a rebuild, or the bands tightened, any suggesstions? the engine would over rev when i would punch the throttle real hard, but now the engine is really over reving in 1st gear, and it really struggles to get into 2ndextreme slippage), after 2nd it is not too bad but it is there and the turbo kick is reduced by what i can feel when i hit the throttle. is it time for a rebuild or a tightening. if i were to rebuild it, what type of shift kits are good for a bone stocker? thanks chad |
Ken Mosher (Kenmosher) | Tuesday, February 05, 2002 - 08:24 am The band isn't adjustable on the 2004R like they were on some of the older THM350s and Powerglides. It sounds like you're in for an overhaul with new bands, steels and clutches. While you're at it, get the hardened stator support, input shaft, and 13 vane pump. |
Shawn (Jsta6) | Tuesday, February 05, 2002 - 08:54 am Mine did the same thing. I had to get it rebuilt. I had the following done: rebuild trainy TCI shift kit Borg-Warner clutches and bands Billet super servo hardened stator cooler It made all the difference in the world. Thing hits real hard now. |
chad frey (Gn86er) | Tuesday, February 05, 2002 - 08:48 pm thanks for the advice, I am getting it rebuilt next week, hopefully it lasts that long, knock on wood. I gonna see how I like it without the shiftkit because the tranny guy who works on gns down here, said that i can always get an external kit if i wanted, being a daily driver, not much of a racer, except for the coupes, haha. thanks for the advice again chad 86 gn |
frank marshall (Turbofrank) | Wednesday, February 06, 2002 - 07:17 am If you plan to rebuild the tranny then save yourself the money and install the shift kit. You can adjust it for smooth shifts. Frank |

Shawn (Jsta6) | Friday, February 15, 2002 - 08:07 am yep, makes all the difference in the world. When I got mine done, it felt like someone gave me a new car. Took a whole week just to get the smile off my face... |
Thomas Black (Thomasb) | Sunday, February 24, 2002 - 11:09 pm ok, this is a personal car problem...only been on 1 day and i already got one. 90 Buick Skylark (not a TR, but its a Buick, and deserves just as much lovin') I was working on putting a new Fuel Filter in, and i was checking the side of my air filter enclosure...APPARENTLY whilest i was jimmying with it one of the vacuum lines that goes to my trany cracked, so after my car refused to downshift unless the RPMs permitted (if i punched, it WOULDNT down shift...) so i replaced the hose...and now its slipping in the 2-3 gear switch...and im magically low on Tranny fluid...does the vacuum line lead to the tranny fluid? HELP THIS POOR NEWBIE! |
Ernie Barany (Ernieb) | Friday, June 07, 2002 - 09:36 am Hey chad, Does the backfiring occur when you into it at more than half throttle? If so, check to make sure all you vacuum hoses are connected at the waste gate, the tee connector ad at the boost soleniod valve on the passenger valve cover. I had a similar problem and noticed that the original vacuum hose connecting to the waste gate was dry rotted and cracked. Replaced the hose and the car was back in business. Hope this helps. Ernie |
