Can I replace the u-joints on mt TR myself or does it require a shop press of some sort. Thanks.

The GN ones have the plastic stuff melted to retain the caps. I always just put the driveshaft in the vise and heat the end caps with a propane torch until the go "pop"! (Or more like "BANG"! :))

Then you get the caps out. I just use an old a hammer to pound the "cross" all the way to one side and force one of the caps out if they are still a bit sticky. Sometimes they just fall out.

Clean all the old plastic crap out of the groove in the yoke. The new replacement U joint should come with more conventional retainers (C clips) That snap in place.

Reading your post reminds me of when I was redoing my u-joints from stock. Be patient with the heating process if they are stock. The plastic glue-like material the factory put in there takes a bit of heat to get them out. Like Ken said, they might pop or may even blow out the side like one of mine did. Just stand clear of their path and you'll be o.k. Oh, yeah, and try not to mind the smell. That stuff really stinks. Use good ventilation in the area you are working. A small propane torch won't heat them up enough, it needs to be a good-sized heat source. Good luck!

Yep... use a torch with the camp stove size bottles. Works just fine for me ...

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm not planning on tackling the project for another couple weeks because the GN's in storage(live in Michigan), But good to have some knowledge before hand. Thanks.
