Patrick Ireland (Pireland) | Thursday, June 20, 2002 - 06:08 pm I am going to attempt to install the Eaton Posi in the GN this weekend and next. While I'm at it, I figured I would change the axle bearings. Does anyone have a "trick" for removing the races from the rear end housing? The manual says use an adapter (it looks like a special tool)and a slide hammer (which I have)but I'm hoping there is a way for the backyard mechanic. Also, should I get the axles magnafluxed? This was a peg leg and I'm not sure how much load I could have put in the axles as the one wheel spins so easily. When I reinstall the differential unit, how tight should the shims be? Should I tap them in with a plastic mallet? What do you think about changing the pinion bearings/seal? I would rather not as the shimming should be correct; but, I will if the concensus is that those bearings have a tendency to fail. Thanks Patrick Ireland '87 GN |
