Kurt Lichtenthal (Kurt164) | Friday, July 18, 2003 - 10:03 am I have an 87 T-Type that I've owned since new when I shift from reverse to drive the rear end makes a clunk,no noise when going from drive to reverse. Rear end does not whine or make any other noises. U-joint's are good. I even paid someone else to check the backlash and he agrees with me everything is to spec. Car has 7000 original miles, any suggestions? |
Kevin Webb (Onefastjackass) | Wednesday, August 06, 2003 - 02:21 pm I don't know if it's correct but I found mine was doing the same thing and that most people say that it is normal. Mine has 34000 miles and does the same thing.I checked all the attach points and bushings on the rearend.Checked for play in the u joints etc. And nothing was wrong so I did a search on another board and most people say it is normal. So I am just gonna drive it. You might want to check all the rear arms, bushings, and bolts for tightness. And wear or elongated holes if nothing is wrong then I would just drive it like I am doing. |

Dave Moberg (Dmoberg) | Friday, August 08, 2003 - 04:20 pm Just my 2 cents on this one....Could it be the rear end snapping up to the pinion snubber? I checked mine out, I was wondering what that noise was myself. I'm pretty sure that's what's going on with my 86 GN. I also noticed a couple vendors sell the longer snubbers, they are just about long enough to touch the rear end...supposed to reduce the "clunk". Again, I'm no expert with this stuff. I'm just guessing and figured I'd pass it on for consideration. Let us know if you find the "definitive" answer to the mystery noise. See ya |
Kevin Webb (Onefastjackass) | Saturday, August 09, 2003 - 10:06 am I had my head up under the car while my wife shifted it and it didn't seam to be hitting on the snubber. I think the only time mine touches the snubber is when I am really getting on it. Kevin |
Steven Roman (Stever) | Thursday, October 30, 2003 - 10:33 am I had a 87 Monte Carlo SS with 3.73 gears that had the same noise. Don't know about my 85 GN because I haven't had the sob running since I bought it. Kevin, That is one sweet nickname you got there! |
