Why is my car one legging when I try to light up the tires?
My guess would be that it doesn't have a positraction rear end. The posi was an option and not standard in any of the "1st run" GNs.
I thought that 87 GN's only came with posi or limited slip
Nope. It was option code G80 on all the "first build" turbo Regals. The "extended production" GNs (built after demand far exceeded projections) so they bundled up the posi as part of of the build.
Like Ken said G80, or posi wasn’t standard on TR’s until around June 1987. Most Buick dealers didn’t know what “limited slip” was and the old rule of “don’t add options that are not visible to the customer on in stock units” still applied. I added posi to a lot of TR's in the service department from 1984-87.
If you have G80 on the label in the trunk try this. Jack both wheels off the ground. Put trans in park. Using a torque wrench on one of the wheel lug nuts turn the wheel clockwise. It should take 35 foot pounds before the wheel turns. If it’s less it means the posi clutches are worn out. GM sells them in a kit #231127. It’s also a good idea to replace the spring #231260. My car will dog leg a little on a 1-2 up shift with street tires but not with BFG drag radials.

You want to stay with the 3:42. Don't accept anything else.
Next: What are your goals with the car. If you want to stay mostly stock, you can just change the differential. I used a Borg-Warner unit, no problems.

The GN vendors, like Jack, typically know what you will need whereas the Jegs and Summit people may not.
Most trans shops can help you out. My 87 Turbo-T was one wheel peel. I had an Alburn Pro series installed...no problems.
