Im trying to replace the heater/ac box firewall gasket cause i've got a big leakage problem. I've gotten the upper case off, the heater core out, ALL of the outer(engine-side) lower case bolts out. The problem i have now is that i can not separate the engine comp. side of the a/c assembly from the interior side. I've removed some bolts on the interior side, but it still does not want to budge. Its pretty lose and wants to slide around a little. Any ideas? Btw, DOES this separate into 2 pieces?

one more question: does anyone know what to use as a gasket sealant? I've been told not to use RTV.
Thanks for any help,

I'm not sure what you're trying to do here exactly, are you trying to pull it apart or pull it out? The box comes out as one piece. You need to check all over the place for bolts. It sounds like you are close if it will slide around. I'm not sure of any tricks that may be needed with the car together. I took mine out when I had the front clip off and the interior out. You need to make sure you have all of the heater controls disconnected too, they go to the box and connect I *think* on top. And for sealing, I think I ended up using some black RTV over the gasket. Meaning I put the gasket in place, bolted it in, and then ran a bead of black rtv along the gasket and smoothed it over with my finger, just to make sure it's sealed. Good luck.

Well, all i want to do is reseal the firewall because i have a HUGE problem with water coming through somewhere in that area when it rains. The metal under the gasket is rusting out in a bad way so i wanted to take it out and put some POR 15 on it, then reseal it. However, is it correct that the ENTIRE a/c box is in ONE piece? I mean does the part on the engine side of the firewall disconnect from the part on the interior(under the dash)??? If not i see no way to get it out without taking apart the engine so as to enable the outer part of the box to swing around.

Thanks,

I took mine out in one piece. The lip you see on the engine side is the edge that keeps it from falling in. There might be a way to take it apart, ie separate it, but I don't know how to. There has to be some way to do it I would think so you can change the heater core if you need to. One thing you have to remember though, I took mine out with the front clip off of the car, so no fenders, inner or outer. I just looked at mine and about the only thing I can think of is that the top may come off to get to the inside, but I'm not sure. Maybe somebody else has had to change a heater core and can let you know if they got it apart. Good luck

Ok, thanks Scott

Anyone else know if it separates?
