Tom Bailey (Tkbailey) | Tuesday, December 24, 2002 - 04:46 pm Hey, can anyone tell me how to go about replacing the weather striping on an 87 gn hardtop? Is there a glue that you use or what? Thanks. |
andrew ostensen (Mybuick) | Tuesday, December 24, 2002 - 08:45 pm 3m makes a weatherstrip adhesive and you can get it at a major auto parts store for 10.00 |
Phil Aubrey (Paubrey) | Thursday, December 26, 2002 - 02:33 pm Removing the old will take the most time. Make sure you get the "U" channel clean. Notice where the factory applied the glue. It's on the inboard side only. Lay the new one in and check for fit first. The 3M weatherstrip glue comes in black or yellow. Use "super" black. Try not to stretch it as you go.This glue dries fast and not much is needed. |
Eric Fisher (Ericf) | Thursday, December 26, 2002 - 03:09 pm I've replaced mine several years ago. The correct way to do it takes some time and is a little different than what Phil describes. The way I did it was I removed the weatherstrip retainer from the roof. You will notice the strip is not glued to the roof but to the retainer. It is glued to the retainer, like Phil said just on the back(inside) side, and the retainer is held onto to the roof with screws. Peel back the weatherstrip gently to see the screws. Use a #2 Phillips bit or you'll end up striping the heads.Gently pry the retainer off the roof. Gently as it is real easy to bend it. They used a special tape-foam seal to seal it to the roof. Try to get a urethane-silicon type adhesive to reseal because if you dont get a real good seal here it'll leak like a sith. Before you reattach it notice how the old weatherstrip is glued to the retainer. You want to install it just like the factory did and you need to do this fast enough in case you need to adjust it to fit the window. The tricky part is on the B-pillar. There is a vertical trim molding that lays on top of the retainer. They use a lot of glue and you have to be skillful and patient to get it off with no damage. Screw up this and you are really screwed because new ones aren't available and used ones are just as tuff to remove. Just reverse the precedure to reinstall. By using the urethane type glue it gives you enough time to correct your mistakes if you make any. Even though it sounds like a difficult procedure its really easy if you have just the basic mechanical skills. Its just time consuming. |
