Jim F. (Saudisy) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 06:40 am Hi all, anybody know if anyone makes any kind of glue on or after market replacement/repair part for our dashes, got about a 4 inch split on front corner seam of soft part of my dash right in the middle. Might be able to glue it back but would rather do something better than that. Also, the original owner put larger front speakers in and cracked the flat piece that goes over the speakers, anyone make a replacement part for that long flat piece that goes over speakers between windshield and padded part of dash? appreciate any info Jim |
Robert Smith (Rsmith) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 07:58 am JC Whitney has a "vinal repair kit" that may work. It comes with a soldering iron looking thing, and some different colored plastics, but I wouls plan on painting it. For not that much $, if it works, it should look better than the fuzzy cover kits that are available. What have you got to lose? You can always cover it later. The speaker cover thing is still available, even from the dealer maybe, but only in blue for arround $100. Check with the site friendly vendors (Kirban maybe??) Bob |
Jim F. (Saudisy) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 08:40 am Hi Bob, thanks for the info, I have a vinyl repair kit but dash has to be held together to repair it and that kit can't handle it. Was hoping there was a glue on hard plastic cap like they make for some other models, but I can't find one listed anywhere. Thanks for the reminder about the dealer for the flat piece, will hit 'em up on the way home today. Jim |
Pony Killer (Pnyklr) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 09:04 am I put taller speakers in the front of my 85, so I put them in from the bottom and it worked fine |
Jim F. (Saudisy) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 09:33 am Hi, Good idea, wish the previous owner had thought of it. Would save me 100 bucks. |
Phil Aubrey (Paubrey) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 09:48 am Front speaker cover is still available from GM. Part numner 25520629 and GM Parts Direct sells for $63.91 plus shipping. They never came in gray, only blue and are easy to paint. Make sure you have a good bite on the screws that hold it down. If you strip the ones by the windshield it's not fun. Sometimes with age and heat the screws weld themselves in. You can use a solier gun to heat them for easy removal. You don't care if you burn the old cover. |
Phil Aubrey (Paubrey) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 10:03 am Ask the used car manager in the local new car dealers in your area for the phone number of the vinyl repair guy that visits their dealership. These guys can do wonders with your problem and are generally very reasonable on price. They will come to you home to do it or maybe on the dealer lot. They go from dealer to dealer in a mobile van. |
Jim F. (Saudisy) | Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 10:31 am Thanks Phil, will take both your suggestions. Used their invisible dent remover guy already, if the vinyl repair guy is as good, then I'll be squared away. Jim |
Ron Pike (Thedoughboy) | Friday, November 07, 2003 - 06:54 pm How about having your dash recovered. Better yet buy a cheap used core and have it recovered. That way your not driving around with out a dash. Done that, it sucks! Try Just Dashes in So Cal. I think www.justdashes.com is the site. HTH, Ron |
Jim F. (Saudisy) | Sunday, November 09, 2003 - 11:51 am Ok, will give it a shot. Got the flat piece on order already from gm parts. Thanks for the input from everyone. Jim |
