It seems that a certain number of the 87s have some sort of metallic flake in certain parts of the car ... there's a big debate over why that is (anything from not properly cleaning the guns, to changes in paint formuation have been kicked around).

Regardless, some cars have some sort of goldish metal flake in some body panels. My car (which I ordered from the factory in late 86) has this gold fleck in the rear quarters, rear shelf above the trunk and lower sail panels. The front fenders, doors, and hood are black-black... no flecks. I noticed this when the car was new and have seen it on others too...

Take a look at:

http://www.gnttype.org/general/vin.html

It's just the check digit of the VIN ... his happens to work out as "X". It doesn't really indicate anything.

The H is the year (1987) and the P is the Pontiac, MI plant.

If I understand your question, you're wanting to paint a regular Regal black, including what are probably chrome bumpers, right?

You really need to strip the chrome off the bumpers if you're going to paint them black. If you don't, the paint won't stick very well.

I have an 87gn that is being painted. Can anyone tell me which parts will be main body color and which trim pieces get the satin color. [Bumpers, air dam, spoilers, and all body molding etc.]

The trim pieces that should be satin are as follows: window moldings(all), tail light trim, molding/bottom of deck lid, wheel opening moldings, handles, locks, molding/rear of hood, air dams and associated plastic parts behind them, head light bezels, grill, antenna assy nut (angled base is gloss), door edge guards, plastic assy behind rear license plate and wide trim piece at the base of the windshield. All above trim pieces can be painted with the same paint as the rest of the car, have your paint guy add "flattening agent" to the color. There is no set formula, it'll change the black from gloss to flat depending on the amount of product used, so test cards will have to be shot to match existing finish. Also, all fexible parts (bumper rub strips, air dams, and bumper filler panels will have to be shot with "flex agent" to hold paint properly. E-mail me at: slowsix@excite.com for further discussion.

I think it's about time to paint the GN since the recall repaint was poorly done in the first place. The body shop thought it would look good in metallic black. Any thoughts?

as long as it is a very fine gold metel flake it should look great and original.
