I was wondering if anybody out there knows where i can get a new or used track, for my driver side power seat. I need a new one because the track in the 87GN is broken and the seat moves back and forth. GM has disscontinued the track and the bucket seats so it is a hard find, I have tried other tracks from regals and other g-body's but I need to find a power bucket seat. The track is different from the rest. Any suggestions.

I seem to remember that Kirban made a power passenger seat kit using the Cimmeron passenger seat, maybe the the drivers side is the same as ours. Just an ideal

Mike -

The track for the driver's side power seat in my '87 GN broke a while back. I took it out to weld it up only to discover that it was made from aluminum. I found a local welding shop that could handle the aluminum and had them reinforce the darn thing so it won't break again, hopefully, for at least another 100,000 big-butt miles. Perhaps yours can be fixed, too? I would venture that any used one that you find will be half-way to breaking and would benefit from reinforcing before you install it.

Good luck,

Ernest,
I recently fixed my power seat problem. My seat would tilt me back to the left if I took a corner. I took the five or six nuts that hold the seat down to the floor, which you get to after you remove the four plastic covers (they have phillips head screws in them). The nuts should be 13mm. After that, you should pull it out and lay it down to see if you can actually see if something is broken. I always thought mine was a bad motor, so I pulled the other four bolts out, 13mm, that hold the seat to the frame. Here's a hint, make sure you have your seat all the way up before you take it out of the car, it makes it much easier to get those bolts out. After those are out, the seat will be seperated from the frame and you can look to see what you find. On mine, the outer-side rail had two problems, first, where it bolted to the seat it was cracked in half, and the real problem was the special retaining piece that one of the up/down motors hooks into was broken in half, so when you pushed down on it, the frame went down about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. The frames are pretty much together, they are pinned together and you can't really take them apart, and the upper rail, and I think most of it is aluminum, so you really can't weld it either, unless you've got aluminum rods. I went to the local junkyard and picked a G-body. Happened to be an 81 Cutlass, with a 60/40 split bench, power driver's side. I think the power seat part was changed because I found a 86 number on it, so you may want to look closer towards the year of your car. Riveria's also seemed to have power seats, with the controls in the door, but the rest should be the same. The setup I got matched mine, almost perfectly. The lower mounting parts and everything with exception to the color of the guards the cables spin in was exactly the same. I did find out that the mounting holes for the seat itself were different. So I used my old one, some masking tape and a razor blade and made a template sort of to know where to drill. I then put the tape on the new ones, used a drill to pretty much get the holes there and then used a dremel tool to open the holes up a bit. It bolted on just fine. Although it does seem like I can see more of a gap between the seat and the console, but I was just used to the view from a broken frame. Now it works great and I don't have to worry about throwing it into a corner and feel like I'm gonna go flying out the window. Good luck, hope this helps,
Scott
