I found another GN that has a wide crome strip on the bottom of the door and the fenders. I am about to repaint my GN and would really like that crome Strip on my car. How Do you get it off with out harming the crome and then attach it to another Car?
From the way it sounds, I'd be curious as to whether it's a GN or not. It sounds like the chrome trim that was put on the Limiteds. GNs didn't have any chrome on the outside other than the 86 grille. I'm not sure why anyone would want to go through the hassle of putting big chrome strips down the side of a GN. But, from what I remember you can pop the chrome off by lightly prying the top or bottom edges away from the car, do either the top or bottom until it's free then you should be able to just lift it off, if you do the bottom (if you do the top, it should just fall off). The strips attach to plastic pieces that are attached to the car via pins. By pins I mean a rivet type thing. It looks like a nail that was hammered into the sheetmetal but not hammered flush, with about 1/8 inch space left, which is where the plastic can slide on and be secured. It's the same pin thing GM has used on several cars to hold on chrome trim, like around the rear windows. I believe they make kits, maybe Year One, that are used when you would have to cut out rusted sheetmetal with the pins on and you needed to put those pins back on. They are a pop rivet with a special countersunk part that allows you to push it in as hard as you can but still gives you enough room to attach the clip. So you'll have to find a good set of chrome, good luck, and then find good plastic pieces, maybe Year One, and then line everything up, drill the holes in the doors and fenders, put the pop rivets in, attach the plastic clips and snap on the chrome. IMO a large amount of work. IMHO, a complete waste of time, something I would never do to a GN, but to each his own,

This chrome strip can hold in dirt and salt that in turn will hold in moisture, and help to rust out the doors. If you are in an area where this might be a problem, then I would avoid it. Although, it is a cheap way to hide rust too. At least for a little while.
