First time out with the TA61, LC1
2 Attachment(s)
Finally got a chance to hit the track with the TA61, LC1, and Powerlogger.
It also was some of the most horrible conditions I have ever raced in. I was told that the effective altitude started at 2400' and was 2800' by the finals. Pretty sad, because the area the track is in can't be more than 400-500' above sea level. That being said... Two PL files are attached. One from my first pass, and one from my last pass. - The last pass has the fuel increased 10% over the first. - The last pass has the 3rd/4th spark decreased 2.x degrees. (-2.1?) - The WBO2 looks a little on the rich side. However, looking at the EGT and NBO2 makes me think it is actually a little fuel starved. Given the injector DC, I'm just not sure there is more to give. FWIW, the 1/8th splits look close to some of my best runs. Save for the 1/8th MPH, which is a bit off. The back end is kinda doggy on every run. Though to be fair, the MPH increase from 1/8->1/4 is about 22 MPH, which is right at where one of the best slips of the past was that I picked out of the pile. Maybe it is all just due to running through soup for air... Opinions welcomed. The combo is TA61, PTE stock locaton IC, 42.5# "009" injectors, Armstrong/Walbro 340/XP fuel pump (hot wired), Turbo Tweak race chip, THDP, MT ET Radials BTW, I won the "tuner" (i.e. non-v8 class) again. Sadly, only managed a 12.230 @ 109.78 doing it. For this combo, I'm not happy. (Even with the TA49, I would not be happy.) However, others there said they were a full second off with their cars due to the conditions. Always thought turbo cars got hurt a bit less. Anyway, was just trying to tune by the data, not the splits. Let's hear what the gallery thinks... |
Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
ill review the powerlogger files when i get home
can post a copy of the best timeslip what was the 60ft etc... |
Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
For reference, my car with the TA61 in similar DA conditions would be consistently around 11.50/11.60s @ 116-117 (looking thru my old run DBs). 1/8 would be about 91 MPH and top end "charge" was between 24 and 26 MPH on average.
On DA days in the 2000 ft. range, 11.30s/40s @ 118-119+ and closer to 95 -97 MPH in the 1/8. Sounds like something is a little "off"? |
Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
That is certainly what I was expecting. NOT what I was getting.
The final run: 60' -- 1.746 - Other car red lit, no need to launch too hard 330' -- 4.958 1/8 -- 7.747 MPH -- 87.65 - Even with the old combo, I was at 92+ with this sort of ET 1000-- 10.177 - At 11.7 would see ~9.76 here. With softer launch still off. 1/4 -- 12.230 - Meh. MPH -- 109.78 - *hurl* All my runs felt like a leisurely Sunday drive, not aggressive at all. I'm still trying to get the hang of the recording in PL, thus only two runs saved. Also trying to find a laptop holder that isn't too big a structure and still *HOLDS* the laptop. This last one let it fly once too many times. I think seat-belted into the passenger's seat will be fine for now. BTW, this is a new EGT probe. First track passes with it. So the numbers there may be funky. If it was correct, it seems higher than I'd like. And did not zero the MAP, so it may have read a wee bit off. I think it read 0.3 key-off. Not convinced the MAP will show higher values accurately. |
Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
It almost acts like either the converter is too loose or else it really leaned out and dropped off in power at the top end. (Can't see the PL runs, since I don't have the software).

Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
Converter is a Precision "0" pump lockup. And on the data I can see the the lockup pull the revs down, so that appears to be working. While it might seem like "a lot" of converter, this also worked fine with the TA49 combo.

Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
OK ... kind of neat (aside) ... I have PL running in a Parallels window on my Mac! :D
Anyway ... looking at it ... couple things pop out: 1. The MAP is WAY off (I presume?). Looks like you only pull 10 inHg at idle and you MAX out the boost at almost 32 PSI. I highly doubt that? Especially with that low MPH trap speed. 2. Injectors are 105% commanded ... what injectors are you running? If they are 60s, then you need to up the fuel pressure. They should be at ~80%. 3. WB looks reasonable (high 11:1 is about perfect). 4. It almost looks like it lays down or something after the 2->3 shift. RPM is almost the same for a LONG time. I would expect it to go down to maybe 4000 on the lockup and climb to more around 5500 RPM by the end of the trap in 3rd gear (of course, the low trap speed might account for that). Is the converter slipping? 5. Some small spikes of AFR at the top end .. might just be artifacts of the sensor, but also could indicate being on the edge with the injectors being at >100%. |
Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
Re: 1. In my review, the idle reads more like 22+ in. And the top boost reads just under 26 PSI. I think its just a matter of getting the MAP cal'ed. Maybe your instance needed to be zeroed first or something? Would have thought the data file would carry the cal info with it. Hmm... Try going into the 'help' screen and see what the barometric reading is along the "Ctrl-B" line where it says "Hold mouse *here*" before loading a data file.
2. The injectors are 009's. I may just be out of hose. I see 116% near the end of the run. :nilly: Thought I'd give the combo a try, since David Day had it working. However, he also didn't have a Precision housing on the turbo. That might be asking for a lot more on the big end. 3. Good to know. Finding a solid number to target was a little tough. My WB sensor is mounted at the bottom end of the downpipe, FWIW. 4. Give that it is the 5-disc Precision with only a few thousand miles, I would hope it wasn't slipping. I think you can see the RPMs dive when lockup kicks in. Tires are 275/50 MT ET Radials, so they are stock height. I'm guessing the weak finish is due to the car just not making the desired power. 5. On the line the car cuts out a little. Not sure why. Just installed a reman ECM. Coil and module are new AC-Delco from end of last year. Thought I had this problem licked, but maybe I don't. I'll double check for any leaks. Might be time to dive in and get the 60's, though. Think I might as well drive around with a FP gauge first to make sure I have a working pump. Perhaps a quick compression test as well. |

Ken make sure you click 3 bar map option

Re: First time out with the TA61, LC1
Hmmm... assumed it would be part of the recorded file...
I think that's a funny way to do that. I do have 3 BAR chosen. It reads (I'm assuming since I don't have anything hooked up) the default 101.3 kPa (sea level standard pressure)... looks like it's trying to correct your readings for the current BARO (*here*). That's a bad thing, especially since I don't have anything hooked up to give that base reading. I would have thought you'd do a cal, then save the baro for later corrections so it was never relative to a different day or (in this case) a different person reading the file. It'd really be whacked (if that's the way it works) if I DID have a PL hooked up, since our BARO here is rarely above 85kPa (5300 ft altitude). |
