Build date/month from VIN?
 

Hi,

Is it possible to find out when my Buick was built other than the sticker on drivers door? The sticker is so faded that it's impossible to read at all. VIN is 1G4GJ1172HP460868, so perhaps the last part (460868) might give some information/rough estimations? I have also tried Carfax but no luck there either.

I need to know this because of Finnish motor vehicle inspection, weather I need to install a catalysator or not. Thanks.

Sorry, but no exact build date can be established from the VIN alone. However, there is a service for ~$25 that will reproduce your original dealer invoice sheet from GM.

Only Buicks 1982 and newer can have an invoice ordered. Availability varies by GM marque. Cadillac (only) has assembly line build records for most years going back to 1903.

Ordered on line last night for both of my GN's and they called me this morning for payment and said I should have them both tomorrow. Pretty cool. I'm a sucker for any type of original paper work on my cars. Thanks for the thread! :)

There is a build date on the cowl tag. The tag can be found on the drivers side cowl by the wiper arm pivot. In the upper left side corner of the tag is the build date in code. The first character is a letter which denotes the year. G=1986 and H=1987. The next 2 characters are the month. 01=Jan,02=Feb,etc. Than followed by another letter which denotes the week built. A=week 1,B=week 2,etc.
