Whats the difference in a T-Type and a T-Type GN?

I would like to know the difference between a 1986 Regal T-Type and an 86 Grand National. thanks.

GN = black
T-type = various colors, and other options

Technically, every GN (WE2) includes the T-Type (W11) package. See http://www.gnttype.org/numbers/rpo.html

Beyond that, a GN includes different wheels, rear spoiler, different seat material pattern/color and interior color scheme, different badges, a different dash plate, black paint, black bumpers, and a generally higher price.

No mechanical differences.

To expand a bit ...
  • In 1986 there was a "T-Type" which was a specific package that included suspension, trim, badging, bucket seats, turbo motor, black out moldings, etc. As Scott pointed out, a GN kind of "starts" with the T-Type package.
  • In 1987, the options were broken out a bit more and "T" Package became suspension, badging, wheels, and trim.
  • In 1987 you could order a "T" Package Regal with a 307 Olds V8 (it came without the turbo "bubble" hood).
  • In fact, you could get a base Regal with bench seat, column shift, chrome base mirrors, AM Radio and then get the LC2 turbo motor in it (which came with the T package suspension and wheels and A/C as "mandatory options".)
  • Since the turbo motor and the "T" package weren't necessarily linked together in 1987, some unique combinations can be found ... V8 "T"s, Limited Regals with the turbo drivetrain, base Regals with the turbo drivetrain, Regals with bench seats, 60/40 split seats, leather 60/40 seats, buckets, black out trim or chrome trim, etc, etc.
  • A "special" option "T" ... referred to as the "Turbo T" or WE4 was available late in the production run that came black with GN black bumpers, grey bucket interior (not the GN black and grey), no rear spoiler, "T" wheels, turbo motor, and black out moldings. I neglected to mention the '87 oddities because the question was '86 specific.

FWIW, in '87 you could even order a base V6 "T", though who knows why you would have. I'm sure a few do exist, however.

Anyone ever seen a turbo regal without the T-package that came that way from the factory?

They could not be ordered that way, thus would not exist.

Base T-TYPES are usually lighter depending on the options!

And just because a T-Type has a rear spoiler doesn't make it a fake. 1984-1986 T-Types could come with the WH1 Designer Series package which did include a factory rear spoiler. A lot of these cars have been repainted different colors, but should always have the WH1 on the RPO sticker. They were originally Black/Silver/Black.
