shifter handle.

I replaced my old shifter with a new one. When I put the new one on it doesn't shift the gears. The shifter button doesn't engage. Is there a trick to this? What did I do wrong? I don't have the small clip that slides into the handle. Can that be the problem?

Re: shifter handle.

You may need to press the handle down further. The clip is not 100% mandatory, but when you have it, it locates the handle properly. It also keeps the handle from coming off.

When the handle is off you can adjust the plunger in the stem of the shaft for length a bit by turning it. It is threaded, and turning it can make it go in and out a bit. I would not advise doing this if it was working OK before.

I would suggest trying to get the correct clip.
