Is Ticking From Cracked Header?

87 GN, basically stock.

I have the ol' driver side header crack between 3 and 5, about an inch and a half long. My car has been sitting for about 7 weeks, while I waited for brake parts. Now there is a loud ticking that increases with RPM and my knock sensor is starting to go off quite a bit. How can I tell if the ticking is from my cracked header or something else? Also could it be false knock from the ticking?

thanks

Re: Is Ticking From Cracked Header?

My car developed the exact same symptoms recently. Ticking from drivers side, sounds like the top end or the header area, I get knock at WOT, no matter what boost or octane, just a little knock, like 2-4. I have not checked my header, but running 30psi, I guess I have created enough heat to crack it. Let me know what you find out. If you need a header, what will you do? Poston set of headers? ATR? Get stock POS fixed?

I'm going to replace them. Probably either Postons or Hooker. They are about the same price, but different design. Any suggestions out there?

[i]Do the Hooker headers look like the ATR, or the old Kenne Bell units. Both cylinder banks have their own 3-into-1 then both merge at the turbo. Right?

No the hooker headers are completly different.
Both the drivers side and passenger have their own 3 into 1, but they are pretty symetrical and join up together under the moter and then back up to the turbo. The reasoning behind this is that: "headers are tuned with equal length primary tubes to create optimum pressure between the intake and exhaust systems"

The passenger side drops down, joins up with the drivers side and then goes back up to the turbo.

they are available at summit, they have a good image of them at: http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...429+4294923428

Those look awsome! Equal legnth does add volume, but it does have it's benefits also. I think I like!! :)

Thanks for the link!

I think the reasoning is more like "we took some V6 headers, and made them into turbo headers with some more pipe".

They work for very fast cars (like, 10s) but they may slow down slower cars. Go ahead and try 'em. I'll take all those old cracked stock headers you have.

LOL, well, I guess you are right. I bet that is what they did.

Never overlook the crank sensor, flexplate bolts, or valvetrain components as sources of ticking. Sometimes just a gentle adjustment of the crank sensor will fix everything. Still, don't disregard header cracks!

Another comment on the Hookers ... some cars may have clearance issues with converter cover and trans pan, due to the routing of the pipes and condition of the motor mounts (it's pretty tight).
