Chip technology has progressed a fair bit since the ATR (no longer in business) chips of the 1990s. Many use Red Armstrong or TurboTweak chips. The latter are even adjustable, and allow you to adjust several parameters right from the car.
I think it would be fine to remove the 7th, go to vacuum if you must (there are ways to cure Powermaster ills), consider a more recently developed chip, and enjoy the car again.
Not sure that 7th is really helping you at all.
