Default oil pan issue

After getting through the timing chain issue, put the front cover on and then the oil pan... Will not fit... This is the heads up part... Using the ARP main stud kit, the nuts are TOO big on the rear main cap and the rear of the oil pan will not move forward enough to line up the pan bolts... Tried a slight grind on the pan, a no go... Good friend said ARP make 12 point nuts that will give more clearance... Found a ARP # 300-8324, pair of 12 point nuts... That is a 9/16 head on the nut... Torqued in place and the oil pan now lines up with its bolt holes... Next hurdle done... Hope this will help anyone who comes up with this issue with ARP main stud kit on their Buick motor... Now onto getting the top end on... Tom G.

Should've mentioned that to save you the hassle ... but in my defense it's been many years (decades?) since I did the steel mains on mine

You can grind a slight angle on the stud and use the 12 point nuts to gain clearance. I seem to remember that I actually tapered the edge of the 6 point nut with the grinder on mine.

No problem Ken... I found that the 9/16 12 point nuts gave ample room for the pan to fit... The original 3/4 in nuts that came with the main stud kit were just too much for the rear area of the pan... Anyway if others install steel mains or mainly the ARP stud kit they will most likely need the 2 extra 12 point nuts to make things fit properly... Thanks Tom G

Lightbulb Re: oil pan issue

The stud kit the GSCA sells allegedly fits fine. Not sure what is different or if there is a specific part number(s). Pretty sure that is what is on the block I am building.

I had my machine shop install the new studs with 4 new steel main caps, line bore and hone... It seems it is nothing more than the large 3/4 in. headed nuts that were causing clearance issues with my oil pan... The 12 points took care of it... Tom G.

Here is a pic of the lower end with the large 3/4 in nuts in place...The rear ones were just hitting the pan so the bolt holes were not lining up... I didn't take a pic of the after, was just wanting to get the pan on and the lower end done... Here is a link to what the 12 point nuts look like and the big difference in size is apparent... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/arp-300-8326 Tom G.
