downpipe to turbo leak
I have a fairly new TH style,GBody parts downpipe, and I just discovered a slight exaust seep on the lower edge around the puck area to where it mates with the turbo. Should I be finding a gasket or use some type of high temp sealing compound? It's not much and you can hardly hear it but you can see the black exaust marks. I had it off to install a wb o2 sensor and found it. I straight edged it and it seems ok but both surfaces aren't what I would say machined smooth for a good seal. Any imput would be very welcome... Tom G.

Re: downpipe to turbo leak
There really is no gasket for these types of pipes, as that would make the puck no longer be square to the exhaust housing face when closed.
A bit of high temperature (i.e. orange) RTV is definitely indicated. I had to R&R my turbo at the GS Nationals, and did this. I had done it previously, so just dressed the pipe face lightly with a file to clean it off and applied new RTV. A thick bead is not necessary, as it will just get squeezed out and make a mess. Some of that will be inside the pipe, and that is not a good idea.

Re: downpipe to turbo leak
Thanks for the info. I've read through the downpipe search posts and that is what others had said. RTV high temp orange or black, any preference? You mentioned orange and I read another post black seamed to hang in there well. Thanks again for the reply... Tom G.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier.
Note that it may not last forever. It may need to be refreshed every few years.

Turbo Downpipe Gasket; Because of the success of the 3 bolt header gasket.,we use the same MILAM Laminate PSS130 material on this gasket. This gasket goes between the Turbo and the Downpipe for guys running external ATR style waste gates. We specifically designed this gasket to provide a leak proof seal. Most other gaskets even the copper ones leak at this junction. Again this adds up to the ultimate gasket. $20 |

The sealing/alignment thing may be minor, but could cause problems. The extra material issue would warrant trimming the gasket or asking that one be created for just the pipe edge. But...I still question the sealing issue a bit. That issue could be remedied if it was anticipated. I looked into this while talking to RJC at the Nats.

Re: downpipe to turbo leak
He's right I don't have an External stye down pipe, but it is nice to know about the gasket. It might help someone... Tom G.

Re: downpipe to turbo leak
As a side note, I bought and installed one of their MILAM header to turbo gaskets. We'll see if that holds up better than the copper one (One of 2 or three I have had on the car...all of which got pretty rotten over time.)
