Unable to GUN it
Hi all Ive always had this problem and wanted to know if any would know what would cause this. When i gun it I hear a sound like a back fire and black smoke then engine cuts off until I lay off the gas pedal. If had the GN for many years and I was told it has a bigger turbo and injectors (blue). I previous GN was stock and I was gunning it with no problem.

Re: Unable to GUN it
Chances are you are running the boost beyond what the fuel available can support, making the engine go lean, and trying real hard to blow a head gasket.
Do not do this repeatedly. Or at all. It is possible that a vacuum line may have have come loose, fuel pump is not large enough, or there are other problems. Do you have any sort of scan tool to see what your ECM data is? That would help a lot.

Re: Unable to GUN it
Ok I was under the hood and notice a cut hose that goes to a big plastic ball SORRY not sure on what it is. On the left side. Where can I purchase a scan tool on line or what should I get? Also is there a way for me to lower the boost pressure?
Thanks Ruben I live in Van Nuys CA north of Los Angeles |

Re: Unable to GUN it
One step at a time...
- Can you replace the hose? The "ball" is actually part of the emission system, but any vacuum/pressure leak could be part of the problem. - Do you have an external boost gauge, or only the one in the dashboard? - Do you have a digital or analog dashboard? (i.e. digital LED "numbers" that change or a speedometer "needle"?) - Probably the best scan tool for you will be the Scanmaster. See http://www.fullthrottlespeed.com/ite...GN~eq~~Tp~.htm - You may be able to adjust the boost. The wastegate actuator (mounted to the turbocharger) was not adjustable from the factory. But you indicated you had an upgraded turbocharger. So there is a chance you have an adjustable wastegate. It looks something like the attached picture (only much larger) and may have a threaded rod going to the wastegate. If it is visibly threaded, it is adjustable, if it appears to be solid, it is likely not adjustable. The real question is how much boost the car is currently putting out, is there enough fuel for it, and if the boost is too high, why?!?!

Re: Unable to GUN it
1st let me just say thank you for your help.
- I will head out to dealer to replace "ball" or order online - I have both internal and "external" aftermarket boost gauge - The dash is analog - The wastegate actuator does not have a adjust or threaded, what I mean is the arm is a solid piece no way to make it shorter. I am going to look for all the paper work I received when I purchased this car. He had all the info on the type of turbo, injectors run times. I know he told me to keep the boost under 12 with reg 91 octane and 17 on 100 octane. His best run time on 1/4 mile was 11.05. |

Re: Unable to GUN it
can you try posting some detailed engine photos, so we can see what all you have?

Re: Unable to GUN it
Chances are only the hose needs replacing, which should be simple and not require a dealer.

Re: Unable to GUN it
I suggest getting a used one. Dealer will likely not have such a part for a 22+ year old car, anyway. Post a wanted ad here and I'm sure one will be found. Someone in an area without emissions may give it to you.
