Question Re: shifting

Your TCC solenoid might be stuck closed as well. This can happen over time.

Does the car feel like it wants to die when slowing down to stop?

not really it will idle pretty normal after i slow down with it still in drive like at a red light it is all good but when i take off (normal acceleration) it will go good through first then go to second then right to third lugging the motor so when i try to go a little faster it just takes for ever to get up to speed cause its lugging so bad

See Phil's comment and link.

Also, check the tag on the passenger's side of the trans. A TR trans (86/87) will have BRF on it. If yours does not, that may be part of the reason for your issues as well.

My car has recently started doing this. I initially adjusted the tvcable, but it continues. What are your suggestions?

I'm here looking for info.
I have a 69 Skylark, just put in 2004r I bought rebuilt from a guy at the track. Does the same as yours, 1 then 2 then 3,4 and lug.
Bowtie OD said it may be someone had installed a check ball in the lock-up solenoid actuator. I pulled it out, no check ball. Then i pulled the valve body for inspection and cleaning. put it back in same thing.
I spoke to Jerry at TCI, he was very helpful. In the end he suggested i buy one of his VB rebuild kits $80.00. I don't know, but i will soon.

Really should have started a new thread, Flatire...

Do you have any idea what the trans and valve body are out of? Are you trying to set up for lockup? The pump is where that needs to be set.

Really would be best to stay away from the "big names" (i.e. TCI, etc.) when it comes to the 200-4R and stick to the TR crowd with them. They know the most and make all the innovations for them happen.

It's an early trans from an Olds, 81 or 82.
I do have a 2200 lock-up converter, but no power wired yet,
one thing at a time.
