Can anyone identify this wire??
I have a stock 86 GN .. no mods. On the drivers side under the hood there are two dangling single wires which will connect together with a plastic connector but are currently disconnected. I don't recall if they were ever connected since I've had the vehicle (two years). I know they are stock since the previous original owner never did any mods. The plastic clip-together connector is green in color and it is located near the power steering reservoir. Can anyone tell me what the wire is for and how it being disconnected affects the car before I reconnect it?? Thanks....

Re: Can anyone identify this wire??
Green plug is a tach signal tap. Not to be plugged into anything under normal conditions.
Black connector is a fuel pump test connector. Not to be plugged into anything under normal conditions. Disconnected is how they belong unless you have an aftermarket tach or an unusual "hot wire" arrangement. The fact that they mate is purely coincidental.

Re: Can anyone identify this wire??
Thanks for your quick reply ... your knowledge of the GN never ceases to amaze me. I have an additional problem which I thought might be related to those two dangling wires but now I know they aren't.
I have replaced my IAC valve with a new AC Delco unit and am still experiencing idle problems. When I start the car from cold it will immediately idle at around 5.5 K RPM and fluctuates between that and the first red segment of the redline and hover there even after warming up (so it’s fluctuating between 5.5 K and 6 K)… slight tap on the gas pedal does nothing to lower it. If I shut the car down and restart it without giving it any gas (it’s still warm), the idle goes to 3k RPM and will stay there at idle … never anything lower. I’ve checked the vacuum lines and I’m pretty sure nothing is leaking. It also doesn't have the nicest idle but that may be a different issue. Not in the position right now to invest in a Scanmaster and I know that would help a lot to find the problem but … Are there any other suggestions you might have to fix the high RPM problems??? Your help is greatly appreciated. |

Re: Can anyone identify this wire??
Just like was said in http://www.gnttype.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15304 you have to check what the data says. If you can't spring for a scan tool, do you at least have a voltmeter? You need to check the TPS voltage at both idle and WOT. (Ignition on, engine off of course.) Also, see the articles http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/faq/IACresetscan.html and http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/maintenance/TPS.html
As we always say, a scan tool is the most important piece of high performance gear for these cars. You can't tune these cars without one, and it is critical for diagnosing driveability issues. Followups to the previous thread in Driveability/Troubleshooting, please.
