anyone know the fwd transmissions?
I'm building a heavily modified Corvair, with a 3800 FWD package midships, Fiero-style. (so, yes- it is Buick powered!)
I started with an '87 donor car, so it has 440T4? The trans has issues, (old age being one of them) and I'm wondering what I can upgrade to. (4T60?) Thanks Jay |

Re: anyone know the fwd transmissions?
The 440T4 is considered very weak. If you are considering putting out any real power at all, that is NOT the trans to do it with. It was at its limit with the 3800, as it was really meant to be with the 2.5 Iron Duke and the 2.8 60 degree Chevy motor.
The 4T60 is not really computer controlled, I think. It can handle more power. Though not as much as the 4T65 variants. Those I think you would have to control with an OBD2 PCM. Some setting up strong supercharged Series II motors from pre-'97 cars have even modded to get the 4T65E in their cars. I would suggest following the Reatta and Fiero forums as well to see what they have done with respect to the FWD transmission usage. They have a long history with those things that we simply don't have here.
