Engine rebuild...
hi guys was just looking over some threads in here and was wondering how much a standard rebuild would cost on one of these 87 tb v6 engines....mine has 12900 miles plus on it now smokes when first start up but no smoke after that until it sits over night...could be valve seals i guess but with this many miles may as well get a rebuild,...any info is greatly appreciated....thanks

Re: Engine rebuild...
12,900 is very little miles. Did you type that correctly?
A lot depends on what you want done. Want a 600+ capable race build? Or a pretty much stock street build? Like any motor, "it depends". I highly suggest a shop very literate with these cars to do a build.

Re: Engine rebuild...
sorry not enough zeros...actually 129,365 miles on it...there is a puff of smoke when i start it up after it sits overnight...but after that it does not smoke if it just set a few hours, nor when i step on it...have a small rear seal leak i just noticed but is very annoying to me but smoke may be just vavle seals but with these many miles on it i figure since it has to come out may as well freshen the whole engine...just stock as it sits...i live in reidsville nc 27320...thanks

Re: Engine rebuild...
Rear main seal are frequent problems on these cars. There us an article on replacing them on this site.
Before you start slinging wrenches and rip the motor out, why not do a compression check? At least you can try to narrow down the issue. Also, what oil are you using?

Re: Engine rebuild...
I wouldn't let Jiffy Lube or the like anywhere near my car. Their filters may not have the proper anti-drainback valve. This would cause issues (and low oil pressure) at startup, and possibly lead to "dry" startup where the bearings are not properly lubricated. Stay with a good (non Fram) name brand filter. Read the site for discussion on this. AC Delco and Wix are two trusted brands.
