Default Last Grand National ever built?

When did production end? I'm reading H 11 D (last week of Nov. '87)
That had to be pretty late in the run I would think.

Default Re: Build date/month from VIN?

The last Grand National was actually the last G-body, and last RWD car ever made at the Pontiac, Michigan assembly plant. The car was built on 12/11/1987 and the VIN ends in 65288. It was ordered by Bob Colvin whose family owns Springhill Motor Company in Springhill, Louisiana.

The car has several pieces within signed by line workers as it was built such as the turbo shield, up pipe, coolant reservoir, washer fluid tank, etc.

The car is kept in indoor storage and never driven. It has been featured in a Steve Dove book, and some very rough video of the car in the dyno cell at the end of the assembly line and being delivered on January 5th 1998 can be found at http://www.gnttype.org/media/LASTGN15.MPG and http://www.gnttype.org/media/LASTGN17.MPG

Cool Info!!

I bought my GN on 11/27/87 and it still had bumper padding on the front bumper from the transport trailer on it. At the time I did not think of it as one of the final GNs but I'm thinking it had to be pretty close...neat.

I looked at this car as recently as 01/2009. Bob is a VERY nice guy and has some very nice cars. He was cool enough to let me come by his house and take some pics of the final GN as well as tell me some cool stories about how he came to be able to get the car.

Here are the pics I took (This will take several posts since I am limited to 4 pics per post):

Any idea how the sequential (last 5) numbers in the vin were issued? Were they GN specific or applied to G body in sequence? I have a GN built 12/8/87 which I would be interested how close it was to the last GN built.

Lightbulb Re: Last Grand National ever built?

The line had both Cutlass and Regal cars on it at minimum. Not sure if the Gran Prix and Monte Carlo models were there as well, but suspect they were. Usually, there were no guarantees that a string of any particular model would be rolling down the line. However, the GN production ran into late '87. And there were '88 G-body Cutlass models as well, that I believe were produced at the Pontiac, MI plant. It appears those may have been built through December of '87 as well.

That was something that was suggested by one of the people in the plant as the car was rolling down the line. It was simply an added part to help denote it as the last car built... The only GN to have an emblem placed on the header panel at the factory.
