Bought a used MAF online. Got it cheap. It has not arrived to my house yet, but again, it's used and I am only going off of what they tell me...that it worked before it was pulled and is in "good" condition.

Any way to clean the MAF? I guess I can't hurt it if I do, but I heard upper throttle body cleaner would do the trick. Would that kill the circuitry inside the MAF?

Special K,

FWIW, there is "Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner" that has hit the market. I've seen it at PimpBoys, (De)Advanced Autoparts, and GhettoZone. I forget the manufacturer's name but it comes in a red and white can with a black cap and is specifically for MAF sensors. Never tried it though. It goes for about $6 a can.

GhettoZone didn't have any MAF cleaner, so I settled for upper throttle body cleaner since my replacement MAF is not here yet. After I cleaned it, it still was acting up, but after a few minutes, it was working like a champ. So I drove it around the block and then it started acting up again.

I should get another stock MAF here shortly.

Does anyone else use a K&N and run into this type of problem?

You may have way over-oiled the K&N filter. I did this to one of mine and even had some red oil residue on the inlet bell of my turbo. However, apparently it wasn't enough to make my MAF act up. Almost nothin is out of the question with these cars though.

sorry for the late reply. anyway, guess you dont have a scan tool to really see if replacement MAF is OK. Was the K&N totally dry, from water after cleaning before the oil, before placing back on the car? maybe the moisture caused it to foul. I know how these cars can be on the wallet, but if you want to keep the car and not try to guess where the next prob is coming from, please put a scan tool on the list, JMO.
