'84 Upgrade
How difficult (read: time and expense) would it be to upgrade an '84 GN to '87 specs in terms of the mechanics?
My problem is right now I have limited funding but I still would like to purchase a Grand National. Prices for the 1987s a little out of my price range right now (I am still making payments on my '05 GTO). I do not mind restoring or modifying a vehicle, just so long as it is drivable and I can have one in my garage again. Thanks in advance. |

Re: '84 Upgrade
search and search people do it all the time. Just swap the 86-87 engine and wiring harness and all related items into your car.

Re: '84 Upgrade
It'll be as expensive as buying a nicer 87, IMHO (and a lot more work) unless you stumble across a REALLY good deal on a donor car.
Save your money and get what you really want (and not something that might end up being a money pit). Do a search and you'll find numerous people doing the conversion and a break down of the costs ... we had a discussion recently for someone doing a show car and if I recall correctly we were in the 12-15K range (but I think he was starting with a V8 car)

Re: '84 Upgrade
I agree with Ken. Save your money and get an Intercooled GN, 86 or 87 model. They can be found and in descent shape. I see many for sale here and on other boards all the time, and I would love to have another one of them but finances just don't permit it right now.
Don't try to make a car something that it isn't. You will waste a lot of money and time and you won't be really happy in the end. I am talking from experience here.

Re: '84 Upgrade
Actually, you just have to run one wire (the MAT) and add it to the ECM connector.
You will need to do either some pin swapping or buy an adapter to run the later ignition module.

Re: '84 Upgrade
This sounds like something for the FAQ area. It seems to be asked frequently.
