Default TA49 Turbo

Just a question, what is a TA49 turbo and how is it better or not better then a turbo from turbonetics?

TA49 turbo is a very common upgrade from a stock turbo in that it has a slightly larger compressor wheel, which in turn results in an increase in airflow. It's a common upgrade in that it works well (spools quickly) with the stock D5 torque converter and is more efficient (less heat buildup). It is a general consensus that the stock turbo is pretty much all in around 21-22psi and after that the efficiency of the stock turbo drops off dramatically as the air is already being heated so much at this point. Also, a TA49 looks nearly identical to the stock turbo from the outside, hence it is also popular for the crowd that wants to keep their TR stock appearing.

Turbonetics, Limit Engineering, Precision, etc...take your pick. They are all popular and used by the TR crowd.

Lightbulb Re: TA49 Turbo

Both the compressor and turbine wheels are different than stock.

so is the concensus that the turbonetics turbo's are not as good at the TA49?

the reason i'm asking because my GN was not stock when i bought it, it allready has a turbonetics Turbo/wastegate on it with boost control inside the car with a twist of a knob. This is also my first TR so i never actually got to expeirence a stock turbo to even compare too.

my engine is currently getting rebuilt and i want to get an idea of if the TA49 would be a upgrade, downgrade or the same.

They are both good turbos ... and I think it's probably just slight upgrade...
