Question Transmission Shifter Cable Issues

I recently replaced the transmission shifter cable on my 85 TType. The car has a floor mounted console shifter. I put the shifter in the park position (all the way forward) then connected the cable end to the shifter, then connected the other end of the cable to the transmission linkage. When I went to start the car, the car started but I noticed that the transmission was in the reverse gear. What am I doing wrong here? There are no place to make adjustments. Any help would be greately appreciated.

Exclamation Re: Transmission Shifter Cable Issues

Is the mechanical linkage properly adjusted? That is linked to the shift collar on the column where a shifter would be. The floor shifter is sort of an afterthought, and not really done well in these cars.

Is the cable a GM part? Is it the one for a 4-speed car? The one for a 3 speed may not work for our cars!

Default Re: Transmission Shifter Cable Issues

The cable is not a GM part, according to several Buick Dealer, the one for my car is discontinued. While ordering the cable I found out that there are two cables offered for this car. One is longer than the other and the cable has a shorter travel distance. I had to return it and found the right one from a local GN shop "Hye tech performance", which is the shorter one and its from ATP part # Y-651.

I am not familiar with the adjustment procedure. Can you give me some hints as to how/where to make the adjustment. Thanks for the reply.
