Kevin, I have the same kit. Ditch the canister that surrounds the filter, it's too restrictive. Keep the hose so it's still drawing air to the filter.

I'm not sure the cannister 'mounts' so much as it just sits atop the charcoal cannister. I don't believe there is a 'back' to it; I think the filter just seals against it and fills the opening.

Haven't heard that the cannister was restrictive or not. I'd try it both ways and judge the results.

There is no lid. As Keller says, the air filter closes up the large opening. As I recall, a screw is normally screwed into center of the closed end and into the center of the filter to keep the cannister attached to the filter. The other round opening in the filter is where the hose from the air damn is hose-clamped on.

Like Ryan says, ditch the cannister. Lots of threads on the other sites about it being too restrictive. I can tell you when I ditched my cannister, I could really hear the air being sucked in at idle and the "horsey sound" when getting off the pedal.

I would place the cannister onto the filter, and use the location of the cannister to route the hose to it as if the cannister was still there. Then remove the cannister.
