Timing Chain Replacement
Mike Smith
Procedure
Replacing the timing chain is not a real big deal. It will take around 4 hours.
  1. Remove the intercooler.
  2. Pull back tensionor
  3. Remove accessory belt.
  4. remove the harmonic balancer bolt.(hope you have a air gun)
  5. Rotate engine to where the #1 piston is TDC on compression stroke.
  6. Slide off balancer.
  7. Remove small bolts on front of oil pan that bolt onto the cover.
  8. Remove the two screws that hold the cap on the cam sensor. Notice that the wiring harness goes toward the driver's side. Also notice that the "window" in the reluctor wheel is toward the drivers side also.
  9. Remove the bolt, remove the cam sensor
  10. Remove the cover and waterpump bolts.
  11. Remove the two cam bolts (notice teeth are missing from the cam sprocket)
  12. Remove the cam sproket and crank sprocket. Notice the oil deflector on the crankshaft.
  13. Remove the tensioner.
  14. Replace the tensioner. Replace the timing chain and gears with a high quality unit, purchase the updates "roller" type cam button.
  15. Install timing chain and gears "dot to dot".
  16. Reverse order to install.

Make sure you don't forget the oil deflector, make sure you torque the crankshaft bolt to 220ft. lbs., add teflon thread sealer to all waterpump and front cover bolts. Take extra care when installing the gaskets for the front cover. Make sure the gasket doesnt' lay over any oil passages.
