Valve Cover Removal and Replacement with Tall Valve Covers
Carroll Arrington,
Procedure
I just got through replacing the stock valve covers on my 87 GN with the Black powder coated Power Six Logo covers that are used with roller rocker arms. I used the following procedure:

Drivers side

  1. Unplugged the positive battery cable.

  2. Removed the brace on the back of the alternator, that also attaches to the exhaust manifold.

  3. Unplug the alternator harness and other electrical connections and move them away from valve covers. At this point the alternator was removed.

  4. Removed the boost vacuum line and moved it to the inner fender well side.

  5. Removed the MAF pipe and sensors.

  6. Removed all the bolts in the valve cover.

  7. The plastic rivets in the plastic wiring conduit were removed so that it was now flexible enough to move out of the way and the valve cover was removed.

  8. The gaskets were installed on the new covers and with the help of 3M super W/S adhesive .

  9. With the alternator out of the way, it was a straight shot for the taller cover to be installed.

  10. All the new valve cover bolts were installed and snugged up .

  11. Reverse sequence above to finish drivers side installation

Passenger side

  1. Removed all spark plug wires and pushed out of the way .

  2. Removed the heater hoses at the firewall.

  3. Removed the two small water lines that branch off the metal water line that is parallel to the fuel rail line.

  4. Remove the 1" hex nut attached to the water line.At this point , the whole water line unit can be raised straight up and over toward the drivers side.

  5. Remove the heat shield attached to the air condition box.

  6. Remove the valve cover bolts and roll the cover upward and pull it straight out.

  7. Put new cover on and bolt down. Check fluid level of radiator after engine has been brought to operating temperature and allowed to cool because of the loss of fluids when unhooking the heater hoses.

  8. Reverse sequence above to complete passenger side installation.

  9. The new covers were too tall to allow the reinstallation of the A/C heat shield, so I am installing the down pipe heat shield.
