- Go to parts store and pick up a pump. I got a one year and it was $14.99 with exchange.
- While there inspect pump for stripped pulley bolt holes and a chewed up gasket surface, get a good one Also pick up permatex and lower rad hose if they have it. Wouldn't be a bad idea to try and get the bypass hose which also attaches to the water pump if they have it but probably not.
- Drain radiator using petcock on lower pass side of radiator.
- Empty drain pan, you'll need it when 2 of the water pump bolts come out to catch more antifreeze.
- Remove up-pipe.
- Remove maf pipe/hose.
- Remove water pump pulley bolts: 1/2 inch.
- Remove serpentine belt by rotating tensioner clockwise in an upward direction. I think its an 11/16ths bolt but I used a cresent wrench since neither a standard or metric socket seemed to fit the bolt very well.
- Remove water pump pulley:
- Position the crank fan so that the water pump pulley is between two of the fan blades. The easy way to do this is using a 13mm wrench on the crank fan bolts from the turbo side of the engine and rotate the engine clockwise until positioned correctly.
- You'll probably need to move the fan again slightly in both directions to get the pulley off but it will come off with out removing either the intercooler or crank fan.
- Remove the lower rad hose and the bypass hose from the pump.
- Remove the 5 7/16in, 4 1/2in and 1 9/16in bolts from the water pump, tap the pump lightly and it will come off. There is one alignment pin on the lower left side of the pump but it should come off easily once the seal on the gasket is broken.
- Clean gasket surface, make sure new pump gasket area is flat and run a file over it if necessary. I like to use permatex and glue the gasket to the pump and let dry then apply permatex to block also.
- Install pump don't overtighten the pump bolts, should only be about 15-20lb/ft and using steps 9 back up to 3, put it all back together, fill with fluid, fire up and check for leaks, let it warm up, go for a short test drive and check for leaks again. Watch the coolant level over the next couple days to make sure the system stays full.
Thats it. Took me about 3 hours my first time with no air tools and taking my time. |
