TE44 vs. 1986-1987 Stock Turbocharger

Features of Note:
  • This is the compressor side of the 1986-87 stock turbo (left) and the TE44 turbo (right)
  • Notice the the wheel for the TE44 is bigger with equal length compressor blades, unlike the staggered blades on the stocker
  • Stocker has provision for an inlet bell
  • TE44 has the inlet bell integral to the casting
  • Notice how the TE44 scroll (left) is taller and "fatter" than the Garrett housing (right0, as is typical for the TE series
  • Notice the TE44 takes pressurized air from a different place than the TA49
Features of Note:
  • This is the downpipe side of the stocker (left) and the TE44 (right)
  • The TE44 has wastegate hole taken out bigger than stock
  • The wheel design for the TE44 has the same number of fins with a sharper pitch and larger diameter
  • Notice how much bigger the PTE turbine housing (right) is than the Garrett housing (left) ... much fatter and taller
  • Notice the smaller sealing area for the downpipe on the "top" edge

Features of Note:
  • You can clearly see the differences in inlet bells
  • This picture also emphasizes the bigger wheel on the TE44
Features of Note:
  • Stocker (left) and TE44 (right)
  • Turbine housing for the TE44 is clearly larger
  • Stock center section on both turbos
  • You can really see how much fatter the TE compressor housing is compared to the stock appearing housing
  • You can clearly see the differences in inlet bells

Features of Note:
  • Notice the rather smallish "puck" or "flapper"
  • It's attached to the swing arm and the pivot axle goes through the housing
