PLS HELP - 4.1L V6 Timing Chain Dampers?
Buick Folks,
I am replacing the timing chain on our '81 Deville 4.1L V6, an engine I believe is well known in this Buick forum. From the outset I did not find the right hand timing chain damper on the engine. The W/S manual shows both right and left hand dampers in the diagrams, but there is no text regarding the dampers. Various parts catalogues list a left and right damper. Do I need the right damper or is this an alternative for another model using the same engine block? A replacement right hand damper is readily available but the two holding bolts are also missing from my car, and that is the major problem I am facing. If I really do need the right hand damper I will go on a mission to find bolts that will fit. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. |

Is that the Caddy 4.1 V8? If so, TOTALLY different animal from the Buick V6...

Could be the Buick V6 or the Caddy 4100. Never heard of left and right dampeners.

Re: PLS HELP - 4.1L V6 Timing Chain Dampers?
In the mid to early 80's the Buick 252 was an option on the Devilles (RWD). The 4.1L V8, 4.1L V6 and 6.0L V8 were the lineup then.
Does the 4.1L and 3.8L share everything save crank (uses Turbo crank), rings and pistons? All front cover goodies should be the same from VIN "A" V6 to VIN "K" right? Yes, the Buick powered Cad's are fairly rare, my guess would be only a few thousand ever produced. Heck, I would prefer one over a 4.1L V8 anyday for power potential! Drop a turbo on one and hang on.... Quote:

Quote:
There is only a dampner on the RH side. You should be using one if the motor has the stock type single roller timing chain. Buick never used one on the left on the even fire V-6. Those are probally generic illustrations as some of the older odd fire V-6's used one on the left. Here are the GM part numbers for the right side. 25532546-Dampner 1356635-Bolt 1358909-Spring
