Transmission Removal
Ken Mosher
Procedure
I've been experimenting with different converters for my GN and have become familiar with the steps involved in this routine. To help others, here's a thumbnail sketch of how to remove the transmission from your Turbo Regal:

1. Remove the coil pack.
2. Remove 2 top bellhousing bolts (tough to see). 1 holds the tranny dipstick, the other has a large copper ground strap that runs to the firewall. Alternatively, you can wait to do these two bolts AFTER you lower the tail shaft of the tranny by using a 9/16" flex socket and a couple LONG extensions.
3. Disconnect TV cable from throttle.
4. Raise the car as high as you can (jackstands work ok ...).
*Support the tranny with a tranny/differential jack*
5. Remove four 10 mm bolts holding converter shield in place.
6. Remove shield.
7. Remove torque convert bolts (three 15 mm bolts).
8. Remove drive shaft retaining bar (four 13 mm bolts)
9. Drop driveshaft ( remove four 10 mm bolts on rear axle U joint). You will have to remove your driveshaft strap (if stock) or drive shaft loop.
10. Remove cotter pin holding cable to linkage.
11. Disconnect cable.
12. Remove cotter pin holding linkage rod to tranny and disconnect linkage./
13. Undo two 13 mm pan bolts holding cable linkage to tranny pan.
14. Disconnect 4 wire connector from tranny case.
15. Disconnect speedometer cable from tail of tranny.
16. Disconnect TV cable from tranny. (One 10 mm bolt and unhook cable)
17. Pull tranny dipstick tube.
18. Disconnect two tranny cooler lines.
19. Undo four cross member bolts (side of the frame - 15 mm)
20. Undo two 15mm bolts holding tail shaft of tranny to crossmember.
21. Slide cross member back.
22. Lower tranny carefully. Undo the final bellhousing bolts.

I find it isn't very hard *IF* you have an air/power ratchet to reach some of the mid/upper bell housing bolts. It's almost too tight for hand tools, although it can be done.
