You dont want to run too much boost until those other fuel mods are done.It could be costly,I've
been there.

How hard is it to install an 86-87 chip in an 84-85? Then any scan tool used for an 86-87 would work, right?

I don't think you can just swap chips. I'm sure if I'm wrong somone will correct me, I just don't think it's that easy. Any scantool should work, I've never seen one specifically for the 86-87 cars. You may not get as much information though. To get the info you'll probably have to do the swap, I'm not sure if that's just ecm, coil, module, or what. I'm sure John will pipe in and let you know, he's the man when it comes to electrical/electronic stuff on these cars.

Posted on the list by Bruce Plecan:
"It will physically plug in just fine, but it won't work.Part of the code is in the ecm, and part in the prom, you have to have matching pieces for it to all work together. ie, the code won't run correctly when you use the late prom in the earlier, ecm.

You can buy a 86/87 ECM and have a custom burnt chip done for your combo...There are a few vendors that do custom burnt chips.

You can get a 86/87 ECM shipped for $69
Then just take your prom chip out of your stock ECM and throw in a custom burnt chip for around $70. And then you can use a scan tool designed for the 86/87's.

I am curious why you are going with 36# injectors.....you said your car is stock yet. There are other mods that will benefit you before injectors will....hot wired fuel pump, exhaust components, adustable fuel regulator, K&N cone filter, SCAN TOOL, etc. Or are your injectors bad?
Sometimes I have heard of guys saying there stock injectors were good and they replaced then and it made a world of differnce. So I could possibly be a good upgrade no matter what.....I still have stock injectors...got 40# injectors sitting here to throw in. But, for the price of injectors you could do a lot with your stock 84 TR.

You can also find low mile used injectors on the boards for sale, stock or performance ones, that is were I got mine.
Just my .02 cents. Maybe that was a quarter?? Nick

Nick, thanks for the info. About the 36# injectors, I think you're referring to James, who's got the first post. I'm buying an '85 black T-Type after years of wanting to own a TR. I'm just looking into what I can do with it once I buy it. Current mods are: 9" K&N air filter, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, adjustable actuator, 87 turbo, Kirban cold air kit, and red stripe injectors. Would I be better off just using the 84-85 chip and getting a scantool designed for the hot-airs? What do most of you guys do, switch over or use the 84-85 chips? Thanks for the help.

Right now I am still using the 84/85 thumbwheel chip. I just got my 86/87 ECM in the mail, so I will be going with a custom burnt chip. That way you dont have to switch everything over to the 86/87...MAF sensor and a couple other sensors you would have to switch. You said you have red stripe injectors~~~~~40# injectors ??? What chip you running now?? The 86/87 ECM will help your car run better and a custom burnt chip will really make use of your combo. Regular chips dont really take full advantage of your combo. At least that is how I interpreted it. I have Turbolink, but you could get a scanmaster if you were to get the 86/87 ECM and custom burnt chip. And with the 86/87 ECM and turbolink you would get more information on what your car is doing. Custom burnt chip and 86/87 ECM will be cheaper then the whole 86/87 switch over.......and it easier!!! :)

The 87 turbo is good for high to mid 12's, but that is with a intercooler or alky I would say. But, still a great improvement over the hot air stocker.

Get a better fuel pump and hot wire it too!! The possibilities with your car are endless.....and welcome to the "darkside"

You might also want to check out Turbobuick.com there is a hot air section over there too.

Now it time to kick some rustang a$$ !!!!!!
HTH.........Nick

Nick, who makes the custom burnt chips? And all I would have to do is swap out the ECM for an 86-87 and plug in the custom burnt chip and I'm good to go?

I have heard that the 84/5 maf needs to upgraded too.

Also, look in the local j/y for the ecm. one near me, which is quite small, has no less than 3. Out the door for $35.

You can use the stock maf with a custom burnt chip just tell the chip burner that your using it. That is what I was told, and I dont see why it would be a problem. The guy that told me that is running his car that way. You just need to tell burner the upgraded parts on your car......like turbo or injectors..etc. He will burn the chip to match your car exactly.

Try Caspers Electronics for a custom chip. They have a guy that does chips, I think its Jim Testa. Heres his email ~~~ JTesta1966@aol.com
Maybe John will check this post out again and let us know if Jim burns chips??? :)
I had another guys number written down but misplaced it........I will look for it on the other boards.

You need your PROM chip out of your stock ECM. And a custom burnt chip and 86/87 ECM. Then you should be good to go.

Found this on the Turbobuick.com board!!

3 thumbs up to Eric at Turbotweak!
Installed one of his chips yesterday, and the car has never run better!
The thing rips right off of idle all the way to "too fast for et streets" territory.
25 degrees timing and 25psi 0 knock on 92 octane and alky.
Sweet.............

I highly recommend him for anyone trying to decide on a chip burner.

http://www.turbotweak.com

Check his site out 60 bucks for one chip or two for 110 bucks and free adjustments on the chip for a year.....seems like a good deal to me.

His email address is ~~~ eric@ turbotweak.com

HTH......... :) Nick
