I have a stock 84 GN and need to convert my coil pack and ignition module to the 87 setup. To do this what all do i need and is there a good vendor that sells everything needed as a package deal?? I think i need the 87 coil pack, 87 module, adapter plate and wiring adapter, is this correct?

Try Poston Enterprises, i've read their
catalog and found the items you've been searching for. Unfortunately I do not see a kit available for all four parts. Try this. The 87' coil pack and module should match, grind off one of the three studs (of the parallel two)the 87' module has, this should allow the module to sit comfortably and securely on the existing 84'-85' base. The only thing you would actually need would be the wiring adapter.

In my research of converting Ive also read about splicing wires to match the pinouts between the 84 and 87 setups. Do I really need to do this or does the wiring adapter do it for me?? So is this conversion just simple plug and play and thats it or is there more that you have to do to get it right?????

You can cut and splice if you know which wires to switch. The conversion adapater does this for you. I prefer to never cut and splice wires if at all possible. I find that the connections can fail, and for the small cost of the adapter, I don't think that it is worth the hassle, although, I don't know the actual cost. Or, if you are feeling really daring, I think that you can actually slip all of the terminals out of the plug, and reposition them in the correct location. You will have to find out which wires to switch though. And I don't know these either. Sorry for being vague, just listing options. Any of the regular Buick vendors will be able to help you out with this. the good ones will also help you diagnose it better than I have, before selling you anything. Good Luck.

Brian

I bought the module conversion harness for my 85 GN, but forgot to attach it in between the new module and the stock harness when I first hooked it up. The car would not start, then I remembered to hook it up, but now it still wont start. What damage did I do by leaving this harness adapter off?

Eric,

I read the poston ent. catalog, and they do have all four items. Coil pack, module, wiring converter, and the coil base adapter.
