| | Saturday, July 06, 2002 - 03:36 am I still can't get my car to launch at the drag strip, it will only 60' at best 2.088 it runs 13.20's @ 104-105 mph. I'am trying to stall it up as much as I can to get the boost up at launch. I must be doing something wrong because you couls run the 1st 10' faster, it is not spinning I have BFG drag radials on it.The speed is good enough for 12 secound runs if it would leave the starting line. This is my first turbo car. Thanks

| | Saturday, July 06, 2002 - 11:18 pm Make sure you've covered the drag racing basics at: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/sunday.html Also - my last trip to the track got me some bunk 60 foots as well since the track was unusually slick. I was getting 2.06 and best of 1.97 - usually im 1.82-1.93 consistent. (and i should still be lower than that..but thats my problem at this point I use the Nitto 275/50/15's, and boy it makes a difference if i heat them up for 5 seconds vs. heating them up for 1 or 2 seconds. Nittos LOVE being smoked for about 5 seconds. Make sure you're not burning out IN the water either. Roll past it once they start spinning and let them GRIP - just dont stop the burnout until they grip out of the burnout. I have all stock brakes and no line lock, etc. Max i can hold at the line without pushing through after a 5 sec burnout is 8lbs boost. Also - Scott is right..don't trust the factory gauge - it's wrong. Just floor it, and keep holding till you feel the car start to push and want to spin..then back off a tad on the throttle and thats your max boost. Let off, and the only reason you get a 2.x 60-foot is a slick track, or some mustang brought water up to the line and you got water under your rears at the line because it's dripping down his tires. If you can launch at 8lbs and you're not pig-rich..no way should you be betting 2.x 60 foots. ..i hate it when they do that! ;)

| | Sunday, July 07, 2002 - 12:17 am Actually I don't think 1.8's are that bad, I think my best is a 1.79, but of course others have gotten better and with slicks and nasty launches you can get much lower. You do have to learn what your tires/track/car like as far as launch, every car will differ. One thing you do have to watch that I've noticed, especially in the summer heat, if you spend too much time heating up your tires, you'll heat up the motor and that will lose you hp quick. I'm lucky that my tires don't seem to need hardly any spinning, just a dry hop or two to clean them off. The heat also comes in when you are staging the car, something which is different for every car so you'll just have to practice that too to see what's best for you. I get my car to light up the first set of lights then I see where the other guy is, if he's at the line already waiting then I slowly put my foot on the gas and depress to slowly build up the rpms. I've have problems with putting my foot down and it just shoots the rpms and boost way up or shoves me through the lights. When I get to about 5psi I start to pump the brake pedal and it makes the car kind of jerk forward a bit until I get the second light lit up. I try to keep my foot steady on the gas so I don't shoot the boost up(and redlight.) Then as the tree falls I may give the gas a punch or push it down some more but not much. I usually leave with around 8psi. For all I know, Jay's way might be better as far as heat buildup goes at the line. After that it's a matter of car and opinion, some people just hammer the gas at that point (green light) others let the car take off a bit and then stomp it and others I've talked to have even let the car take off and then slowly gotten into the gas. Mostly I think these variations are due to the tire used. People running slicks will probably just smash the gas, I let the car get moving first otherwise I may break the tires loose. Even though the factory boost gauge may be inaccurate, I still use it to launch by. I get my boost numbers from my VDO boost gauge and TL, but I find it's easier(better) for me to just watch the led lights, and I know it's about 2psi off, but it gives me a close enough baseline. You could just be too rich off the line causing it to bog.
