Got my car (86 GN) back after having new valves and valve springs installed. Now when I punch it while driving it burns ALOT of black smoke!! Too rich right?? I do have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator...this should be 42 lbs with the little hose disconnected??(right??) I'll check what it's reading on the weekend.
Not too sure what else to check for! Any help would be really great! Thanks Chris
PS Don't have a scan tool yet

Please help! Other than what I read off this site I know very little about this kind of stuff.
I checked the fuel pressure with the car idling and vacuum hose off and it reads 42-43 lbs. The car has half the power it had before the work was done!! Now what?!? What do I check for now?
I pulled up the "sensor" info from this site and did the "paper clip" thing. I was hoping to get the engine light to flash "something"...but all that happened when I connected A and B was the electric fan would come on. The engine light merely stays on. As soon as I remove the paper clip the fan goes out.
I could really use some guidance! Please help!!

It's been awhile since I used the paperclip test but it sounds like you don't have it in the right spot. I'd go back over the instructions, print them out even, and do everything one at a time. I know when you set up a manual fan switch you have to splice into a wire back that goes into the connector, that's why I think you're not in the right spot. Other than that, you need a scan tool to help give you some better idea of what is going on. Did the shop that did the work know what they were doing? In other words do they work on Turbo Buicks? I mean while they only did the valves and springs, they had to take the motor pretty far apart and who knows what they may or may not have done to everything else under the hood. Good luck

With ignition "ON" and engine "NOT RUNNING"

Did you do it right?

Try pulling the fuse to the ECM and letting it reset.

Maybe I did do it wrong the first time..this time I printed it out and sat it on the seat next to me and followed it exactly. Now the "service engine" light flashes non-stop (not 3 times for code 12 then "whatever other code " may be going off. It just flashes on and off for as long as I hold the jumper paper-clip thing in there. There is also a clicking noise coming from the engine compartment coinciding with each flash.
Also when I pulled it out of the garage to work on this in the sun I noticed that the fuel pump was running continously...not just for 3-4 seconds to prime it like it used to! Any ideas??
I gotta get this baby running nice and strong again for the nice weather.

I seem to remember that if the SES light constantly flashes it means that the chip isn't seated correctly in the ECM or that the connection of the herd of wires going into the ECM has become corroded.

Try reseating the chip and if that doesn't fix it check the wire connectors that go into the ECM for corrosion.

The staying on of fuel pump sounds like a stuck fuel pump relay...it's on the pass side fender. Can't remember which of the 3 it is though. Go to the GNTTYPE webpage and look at the sensor diagram.
